Coastal Rowing Project - Dunbar
Anyone interstered in rowing, buliding boats, basic DIY skills and working with others to create a new sport in Dunbar, youthful and less youthful, local business wishing to donate any funds to community projects, this may be for you.
The Scottish Coastal Rowing Project has been set up to promote the sport of coastal rowing between communities and the art of boat building. Jordon Boats has teamed up with Anstruther Fisheries Museum to design and supply easy to build kits based on a model Rowing Skiff found at the museum. The idea being that each community rasie money to buy the kits and build thier own boats, using them for pleasure, excercise and competition against other towns. The Skiff is powered by four rowers and a Coxain and further details can be found at www.scottishcoastalrowing.org
Several other coastal towns including Prestonpans, North Berwick and Eyemouth are at different stages of build and organisation, as can be seen on the website. In Dunbar several individuals have committed funds for basic materials (we are trying to raise £3000 in total), expertise, and general interst to soon start building the first boat (two would be ideal so we can race against each other), form a Coastal Rowing Club and running it as a community based initiative open to all, young and old.
The prototype boat will be in Dunbar Harbour from 10.30am til 1pm on Sunday 28th March for anyone intersted in seeing what we aim to build and to have a go rowing in the harbour. It will also be on its trailer at Seafield Pond, Belhaven from 230-330pm the same day.
A Public Meeting is being held on Thursday April 1st at 7.30pm at Hallhill Healthy Living Centre to further promote the Dunbar project please come along to find out more and note any interest.
